KING OF THE SOUND SYSTEM

I'm starting my tribute to Dj's with this man, "Sir Coxsone" Dodd, a pioneer in what has become a modern staple, the DJ/Producer.

Dodd began running sound systems in 1954 after a short stint living in the U.S. exposed him to R&B music. He went back to Jamaica with a few records and started the Downbeat Sound System. Dodd would import new records from Miami and New Orleans to play for eager Jamaican audiences. Dodd eventually set up five different sound systems, each playing nightly. He would hire other DJ's to run the parties including a young Lee "Scratch" Perry.

Eventually the R&B trend died out and Jamaicans began to record their own music in search of a new sound. It was around this time that Dodd met Roland Alfonso and Don Drummond, founding members of the Skatalites and began the legendary Studio One.
It would be at Studio One where a young Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer would get their start recording classic Ska and rock steady tunes like "Simmer Down".

"Sir Coxsone" went on to record a hefty amount of classic reggae, ska and rocksteady through out the 60's and 70's and started the careers of many of the genre's heavy weight artists. Unfortunately, like many famous record producers he was also a shister and would often under pay musicians. By any account the man is a legend, and would no doubt influence the evolution of Hip Hop via a young Jamaican transplant named Kool Herc. RESPECT!

New Blog Schedule 2011

Alright, I've decided to give this blog some structure and consistency. Meaning a whole new schedule of weekly content. Here's the rundown.

Mondays:
Mondays will be for new music. I'll review new artists, songs, albums. Whatever, as long as it's current and banging. BANGING!

Tuesdays:
Tuesday is going to be dedicated to vinyl. I'll wax nostalgic about favorite records of mine and the times we've had.

Wednesdays:
Wednesdays will be DJ fan boy day. I'll pick a different DJ every week and discuss they're impact on the art form and culture.

Thursdays:
I'm dedicating this day to hip hop history. Starting from the very beginning, before Cool Herc, back to the Jamaican sound systems and then forward. Every week a new Chapter.

Fridays:
I'm reinstating Honey Knuckles Radio. A random mix of whatever I'm listening too at the moment.

Word.

And that's it. I'm taking the weekend off. WINNING!

N.E.R.D God Bless Us All

Only now giving N.E.R.D's latest album "Nothing" due attention. The Neptunes(Chad Hugo and Pharell Williams) are arguably the most influential producers of last decade, with notable pieces of the pie going to lil Jon and Timbaland (childhood friend of The Neptunes) as well. These albums are more or less the duo's geeky pet projects. They never receive much critical attention but are always impeccably produced. Something a nerd can appreciate.

Dragged my ass out of the Brooklyn basement yesterday and relocated to swankier environs. Enjoyed a performance by Emily Wells, the perfect compliment to my high priced whiskey buzz. Emily sat in the middle of a pile of instruments and through loop recording, constructed something like trip-hop folk music. She plays at the Ace every Sunday in February. Show starts at 9, get there early and grab seats.

This blog is so old and neglected. Who even uses blogger anymore? The kids are all crazy for the tumbler these days. But who wants to be like everybody else? It's time to blow the dust off this bitch and generate some content!

I'm gonna start by recommending that you download Ninja Sonic's New Mix-tape "When Anxiety Attacks". Ninja Sonic came into my awareness a few years ago when I stumbled across the Tight Pants Video while on a Google safari. I caught them at the old Galapagos later that year and experienced a hip hop mosh pit for the first time. The crowd was hype. 99% of the people there knew every lyric to every song and were shouting them right back at the stage. It was the type of participation and enthusiasm I thought was missing in every show I had seen in Brooklyn up until that point. Arms in the air not across chests.

"Clean Up Man" by Willie D features the former Geto Boy waxing adulterous over an upbeat sample of Betty Wright's "Clean Up Woman". The best part about this video is the guy singing the hook. I don't know who this is, but he resembles a gay Cee-Lo Greene cross pollinated with Carlton from Fresh Prince and a bottle of Cool Water Cologne. Fast forward to the 1:05 mark if you need instant gratification. Best line of the song "It's on like a pot of neck bones".

To kick things off I've posted some pics from Mint Condition, the last party I hosted together with knuckle buddies Devin Deveuax and Spase 1 of Mass Processor. Mint Condition is a regular party we will be throwing at Royale in Park Slope BK. The first party was a blast.
